An artificial sensory neuron with visual-haptic fusion
Nature Communications, Published online: 14 September 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18375-yDesigning bioinspired perceptual system remains a challenge. Here, the authors report a bimodal artificial sensory neuron, integrating a resistive pressure sensor, a perovskite-based photodetector, a hydrogel-based ionic cable, and a synaptic transistor, to implement the visual-haptic fusion for motion control and patterns recognition.

Chemical entrapment and killing of insects by bacteria
Nature Communications, Published online: 14 September 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18462-0Streptomyces bacteria produce metabolites with diverse biological activities. Here, Ho et al. show that some of these metabolites are volatile terpenes that attract fruit flies, while other metabolites can kill the insect’s larvae upon ingestion of bacterial spores.

Structural bases of IMiD selectivity that emerges by 5-hydroxythalidomide
Nature Communications, Published online: 14 September 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18488-45-hydroxythalidomide is a primary thalidomide metabolite generated by the cytochrome P450 isozymes. The reported data, including crystal structure of the 5-hydroxythalidomide-mediated complex of CRBN with SALL4, elucidate how additional hydroxy group of the metabolite enhances the interaction of CRBN with the neosubstrate SALL4.

Low elevation of Svalbard glaciers drives high mass loss variability
Nature Communications, Published online: 14 September 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18356-1Svalbard glaciers are among the lowest ice masses in the Arctic, with a peak in glacier area below 450 m elevation. Using a high-resolution climate model, here the authors show that a modest warming in the mid-1980s propagated meltwater runoff above the glacier area peak, amplifying Svalbard mass loss from all elevations.

Deep learning enabled smart mats as a scalable floor monitoring system
Nature Communications, Published online: 14 September 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18471-zDesigning efficient and fast monitoring and response systems for smart building/home applications remains a challenge. Here, the authors propose a smart floor monitoring system developed through the integration of self-powered triboelectric sensing mechanism and deep learning data analytics.

Precise allele-specific genome editing by spatiotemporal control of CRISPR-Cas9 via pronuclear transplantation
Nature Communications, Published online: 14 September 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18391-yInjecting Cas9 and gRNA into an animal zygote often produces mosaicism and random biallelic targeting. Here, the authors use pronuclear transfer to reduce mosaicism and selectively target parental alleles.

Dual blockade of CD47 and HER2 eliminates radioresistant breast cancer cells
Nature Communications, Published online: 14 September 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18245-7The emergence of tumour adaptive radioresistance can limit the success of radiation therapy and immunotherapy in breast cancer. In this study, the authors demonstrate that CD47 and HER2 are coordinating in tumor response to radiation and that co-blockage of both receptors can eliminate radiorestistant breast cancer cells.

Caspase-8 mediates inflammation and disease in rodent malaria
Nature Communications, Published online: 14 September 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18295-xInflammasome activation plays a role in malaria pathogenesis, but details aren’t well understood. Here, the authors show that caspase-8 is a central mediator of systemic inflammation in rodent malaria and that monocytes from malaria patients express active caspases-1, -4 and -8.

A Study of Otological Manifestations of Temporal Bone Fractures
Abstract The aim of study was to evaluate various otological manifestations of temporal bone fractures and to suggest their management. This prospective observational study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital of Armed Forces over 2.5 years in 57 cases of temporal bone fracture in patients of age group of 12–59 yrs comprising 49 males and 8 females. Radioimaging was done for diagnosing the fracture, mapping its extent and for clinical correlation. Hearing was assessed by...

How does job dissatisfaction interact with self-rated health in determining the risk of health-related job loss? Prospective findings from the Health and Employment After Fifty (HEAF) study
ObjectivesHealth and job satisfaction are key independent determinants of ability to work to older ages. We investigated the interaction of these two important factors on health-related job loss (HRJL) over 2 years of follow-up comparing male and female older workers.MethodsA population sample of adults aged 50–64 years, recruited from 24 English general practices in the Health and Employment After Fifty (HEAF) study, completed questionnaires at baseline with follow-ups at 12 and 24 months. Multiple-record...
