Effects of Plyometric Jump Training on Jump and Sprint Performance in Young Male Soccer Players: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Abstract Background Even from a young age, modern soccer requires high levels of physical fitness development, particularly jumping and sprinting. Plyometric jump training (PJT), combined with young athletes’ regular soccer sessions, has the potential to improve jumping and sprinting. However, studies exploring the effects of PJT are generally limited by small sample sizes. This problem of underpowered studies may, thus, be resolved...

Prenatal delineation of a distinct lethal fetal syndrome caused by a homozygous truncating KIDINS220 variant
Abstract Kinase D‐interacting substrate of 220 kDa (KIDINS220) is a transmembrane protein playing integral role in growth mediating pathways in the nervous and cardiovascular systems. KIDINS220 heterozygous truncating variants that affect the protein's C‐terminus have been associated with a phenotype, so far described only in few unrelated children, including spastic paraplegia, intellectual disability, nystagmus, and obesity. More recently, a homozygous, more N‐terminal truncating variant in KIDINS220...

Concerted localization-resets precede YAP-dependent transcription
Nature Communications, Published online: 11 September 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-18368-xThe transcriptional regulator YAP shuttles rapidly between the cytoplasm and nucleus, but whether and how dynamics such as amplitude and frequency affect target gene transcription is unclear. Here, using live imaging of endogenous YAP and target-gene transcription, the authors show that YAP-dependent signalling is encoded through rapid and concerted changes in the nucleo-cytoplasmic distribution of YAP.

Stepwise Load Reduction Training: A New Training Concept for Skeletal Muscle and Energy Systems
Abstract An increased ability to supply energy to skeletal muscle is expected to contribute to greater athletic performance, and therefore, a variety of training methods are used for improving these energy supply systems. These methods are classified into two broad categories: a bout of continuous exercise at a given load/intensity and intermittent bouts of exercise at a given load/intensity with recovery intervals. Interestingly, recent work suggests that a training method which...

The evolution of thermal performance in native and invasive populations of Mimulus guttatus [NEW RESULTS]
O_LIThe rise of globalization has spread organisms beyond their natural range, allowing further opportunity for introduced species to adapt to novel environments and potentially become aggressive invaders. Yet, the role of niche evolution in promoting the success of invasive species remains poorly understood. Here, we use thermal performance curves (TPCs) to test the following hypotheses about thermal adaptation during the invasion process. First, in response to strong selection from novel temperature...

Polygenic adaptation of rosette growth in Arabidopsis thaliana [NEW RESULTS]
The rate at which plants grow is a major functional trait in plant ecology. However, little is known about its evolution in natural populations. Here, we investigate evolutionary and environmental factors shaping variation in the growth rate of Arabidopsis thaliana. We used plant diameter as a proxy to monitor plant growth over time in environments that mimicked latitudinal differences in the intensity of natural light radiation, across a set of 278 genotypes sampled within four broad regions, including...
