A new study finds that reef-building corals emerged only when ocean conditions supported the construction of these creatures' stony skeletons, whereas diverse softer corals and sea anemones flourished at other times. Without a significant change to anthropogenic carbon emissions, the new findings present stark implications for the present and future of hard-bodied corals while suggesting a silver lining for the diversity of some of their softer-bodied relatives.
Researchers have investigated how the parasitic dodder Cuscuta australis controls flower formation. They showed that the parasite eavesdrops on the flowering signals of its host plants in order to activate its own flowering machinery. By synchronizing flowering with its host plant, the parasite makes sure that it can grow on its host long enough to produce the optimal amount of seeds.
A team has discovered a missing link in the evolution of photosynthesis and carbon fixation. Dating back more than 2.4 billion years, a newly discovered form of the plant enzyme rubisco could give new insight into plant evolution and breeding.

Abstract Gastrointestinal tract neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a group of rare heterogeneous tumors with different prognoses. The 2019 WHO classification of digestive system tumors defines the classification of NENs as neuroendocrine tumors (NETs G1-G3) and neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs). We investigated outer dense fiber of sperm tails 1 (ODF1) expression in 137 gastrointestinal tract NENs including 53 NETs G1, 29 NETs G2, 3 NETs G3, and 52 NECs. Twenty adenocarcinomas...

Whether generated within a lab setting or isolated from the wild, variant alleles continue to be an important resource for decoding gene function in model organisms such as Caenorhabditis elegans. With advances in massively parallel sequencing, multiple whole-genome sequenced (WGS) strain collections are now available to the research community. The Million Mutation Project (MMP) for instance, analysed 2007 N2-derived, mutagenized strains. Individually, each strain averages ~400 single nucleotide...

Abstract The rare benign giant cell tumour of bone (GCTB) is defined by an almost unique mutation in the H3.3 family of histone genes H3‐3A or H3‐3B, however the same mutation is occasionally found in primary malignant bone tumours which share many features with the benign variant. Moreover, lung metastases can occur despite the absence of malignant histological features in either the primary or metastatic lesions. Herein we investigated the genetic events of 17 GCTBs including benign and malignant...

AbstractUp to 25% of patients with acute diverticulitis develop complicated disease. Colocutaneous fistula with lower limb fasciitis secondary to complicated diverticulitis is a rare event. A 71-year-old woman with Class 3 obesity and Type 2 diabetes was admitted to the hospital because of left lower limb fasciitis associated with acute sigmoid diverticulitis complicated by covered perforation. The fasciitis was treated with multiple fasciotomies, antibiotics and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The patient...
AbstractMetastatic breast carcinoma is a relatively common clinical entity. However, the prognosis of oligometastatic and polygometastatic disease differs considerably pertaining to five-year survival. Metastatic breast carcinoma to the sternum has been described as early as 1988. We describe two cases in our institution who presented with solitary sternal metastases with a previous history of treated breast cancer. In both cases, there had been a history of previous left breast cancer treated aggressively...
AbstractA prospective analysis of the effect of autologous adipose derived mesenchymal stem cell (AD-MSCs) therapy in the treatment of a juvenile osteochondritis dissecans (JOCD) of the patella. After failed conventional management of JOCD, a 13-year-old patient undergoes intra-articular MSC therapy. Repeated magnetic resonance imaging analyses showed regeneration of cartilage. In this report, the use of AD-MSCs, after unsuccessful conventional JOCD management, resulted in structural, functional...
ABSTRACTUnloading of the left ventricle (LV) is essential for the treatment of LV free-wall rupture (LVFWR), and it is well-known that the LV can be optimally unloaded with the Impella system. However, there has been no report on applying the Impella system for the treatment of LVFWR. Here, we report a patient with FWR after massive myocardial infarction who was successfully treated with non-suture repair via median sternotomy and implantation of Impella CP (Abiomed, Danvers, MA).
AbstractCystadenoma is a rare benign salivary gland neoplasm characterized by a predominantly multicystic growth pattern. The parotid gland is involved in about 45–50% of cystadenoma cases, with the minor glands of the lip and buccal mucosa being the next most common sites. The tongue is rarely involved; only one congenital case is reported in the literature. Here, we report a 63-year-old man who was referred to our hospital for a nodule on the right edge of his tongue that developed into an elastic...
AbstractTissue expansion is a versatile tool in resurfacing soft tissue defects of the breast, extremity, head and neck that involves the placement of a temporary implant adjacent to a soft tissue defect. Incremental expansion exploits the viscoelastic properties of skin to generate a skin flap that can be used to resurface defects and provide cover over permanent protheses. Infection, implant extrusion and skin necrosis are recognized complications of tissue expansion. This article presents a revised...
AbstractPapillary meningioma (PM) represents a very rare histological subtype, which may present with massive intracerebral hemorrhage. Gross total tumor resection results in a lower recurrence rate and mortality. A 69-year-old man had been experiencing headache for 6 months. After exacerbating right frontal headache, he was brought to the emergency room. His Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was 11/15 and he had a left-sided hemiparesis. A computed tomography brain scan revealed a massive right frontal intracerebral...
AbstractMeningiomas are benign tumours common in the central nervous system. Primary extracranial meningiomas in the jaws are extremely rare. We performed a systematic review of all the primary extracranial meningioma arising in the jawbones reported in the English-language literature including indexed and non-indexed journals and we report a unique case in our hospital of a man with two primary extracranial meningiomas, the first frontal intradiploic and 16 years later, a second located in the mandible....
AbstractSpontaneous pneumothorax occurring in patients with pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) caused by hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is extremely rare. We report a case of spontaneous pneumothorax in a PAVM patient. A 26-year-old man with previously diagnosed HHT and multiple small PAVMs presented with chest pain and dyspnea and was referred to our hospital. Chest X-ray showed a left-sided pneumothorax. Computed tomography (CT) showed apical bullae on both sides of the...
