Odour-mediated group organisation and coordination in the termite raiding ant Megaponera analis (Mayr)
AbstractVisual and olfactory communication are vital for coordinated group hunting in most animals. To hunt for prey, the group raiding termite specialist ant Megaponera analis, which lacks good vision must first confirm the presence or absence of conspecific raiders. Here we show that, M. analis uses olfactory cues for intra-specific communication and showed greater preference for conspecific odours over clean air (blank) or odours from its termite prey. Chemical analysis of ant volatiles identified...

Ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is a potent inhibitor of the human sweet taste receptor
AbstractA sweet taste receptor is composed of heterodimeric G-protein coupled receptors T1R2 and T1R3. Although there are many sweet tastants, only a few compounds have been reported as negative allosteric modulators (NAMs), such as lactisole, its structural derivative 2,4-DP, and gymnemic acid. In this study, candidates for NAMs of the sweet taste receptor were explored, focusing on the structural motif of lactisole. Ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), has an α-methylacetic...

Pharyngocutaneous fistulas after total laryngectomy or pharyngolaryngectomy: Place of video‐fluoroscopic swallowing study
Abstract Background Specify place of video‐fluoroscopic swallowing study (VFS) in the decision of oral refeeding after total pharyngolaryngectomy. Methods At postoperative day 7, a blue dye testing was performed. If negative, a VFS was performed looking for a blind fistula. If this exam was negative, oral refeeding was started, but if a blind fistula was observed, cervical compression bandage was performed. Results In 186 patients, a VFS was performed for 142 patients with negative...

Use of intraoperative neural monitoring for prognostication of recovery of vocal mobility and reduction of permanent vocal paralysis after thyroidectomy
Abstract Introduction The benefits of intraoperative neural monitoring (IONM) of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) on post‐thyroidectomy vocal cord palsy (VCP) rates are contentious. We wished to study impact of IONM on permanent VCP after thyroidectomy. Methods Retrospective review of prospective series of 1011 (1539 nerves‐at‐risk) patients undergoing thyroidectomy without (418, group 1) and with (583, group 2) IONM. Results There were three recognized nerve injuries in group 1, vs...

Prognostic nomogram for adenoid cystic carcinoma in different anatomic sites
Abstract Background Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a relatively uncommon tumor. The existing prediction model is limited to the head and neck. We aim to construct a prognostic nomogram combined with the clinical features and treatment options of ACC to predict the disease‐specific survival (DSS) of patients diagnosed with ACC in different anatomic sites. Methods A novel predictive model was constructed using 1285 patients with ACC from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results...

Diversity: A Necessity in the Otolaryngology Workforce
This Special Article Series, Intentionally Shaping the Future of Otolaryngology, is designed for otolaryngologists and health care leaders to reflect upon where we are and where we would like to be. It is clear that sitting back and waiting for change to happen is not adequate.

Changing the Management of Pain in Otolaryngology
Physicians the world over have come to understand the role we have played in contributing to the current opioid epidemic. There are an estimated 2 million patients in the United States who have an opioid use disorder, with approximately 90 deaths occurring every day in the United States from an opioid overdose.1 However, the roots of this crisis are deeper than a single factor would explain. This issue of Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America, guest edited by Drs Eloy, Svider, and Pashkova, takes...

Preliminary exploration of robotic CME for colon cancer with the domestically produced Chinese minimally invasive Micro Hand S surgical robot system
Abstract ObjectiveTo summarize our initial experience with robot‐assisted complete mesocolic excision (R‐CME) using a domestically produced Chinese surgical robot by a short‐term evaluation.MethodsFrom March 2018 to December 2018, 25 patients with colon cancer underwent Micro Hand S R‐CME. The operative findings, morbidities, and oncological findings were analyzed.ResultThe median operative duration was 210 (range,180‐235) min, and the median estimated blood loss volume was 55 (range, 25‐125) ml....

Home Sleep Testing to Direct Upper Airway Stimulation Therapy Optimization for Sleep Apnea
Objectives/Hypothesis Selective upper airway stimulation (sUAS) is a well‐established treatment option for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This study aimed to determine if there are benefits in performing a home sleep test (HST) to evaluate postoperative sUAS effectiveness after patient acclimatization compared to the generally used polysomnography (PSG) titration, as measured by long‐term follow‐up outcomes. Study Design Retrospective comparative cohort analysis. Methods We conducted...
