Antihypertensive Medications and Falls in the Elderly

More than two-thirds of elderly persons (≥65 years) in the United States have hypertension.¹ In addition, prospective cohort studies have shown that aging is significantly associated with hypertension prevalence. For example, the Framingham Heart Study reported that the prevalence of hypertension increased from 27.3% in individuals <60 years to 74.0% in those >80 years.² As hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidities and mortalities, especially in the elderly, treating hypertension in older individuals is an important task for clinicians.
