Protons vs Photons for Unresectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Liver Decompensation and Overall Survival Proton Radiotherapy for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

In this retrospective study of non-resectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), proton radiotherapy was associated with improved overall survival and decreased incidence of non-classic radiation induced liver disease as compared to photon radiotherapy. There was no difference in locoregional recurrence between the two modalities. The improved overall survival observed with proton radiotherapy may be driven by decreased incidence of post-treatment liver decompensation and should serve as an impetus for prospective investigations comparing proton versus photon ablative radiotherapy for HCC.
