Gender, Professional Experiences, and Personal Characteristics of Academic Radiation Oncology Chairs: Data to Inform the Pipeline for the 21st Century

Surveys were distributed to 95 academic Radiation Oncology chairs to evaluate whether personal and professional characteristics differ by gender (response rate 76%). At the time of their first Chair appointment, women had higher grant funding and distinct familial challenges compared to men; once appointed Chair, few differences emerged in respondents' professional goals, challenges, and leadership practices as a function of gender. Purpose and data-driven interventions may be warranted to ensure equity and diversity in the Chair selection process.
