Patterns of local failure after stereotactic body radiation therapy and sequential chemotherapy as initial treatment for pancreatic cancer: implications of target volume design

No studies have investigated patterns of local failure of SBRT as initial treatment for pancreatic cancer, which may result in controversy of delineations of target volumes. Areas at a high risk of local recurrences were identified, which were also plotted with respect to vascular anatomy. Areas closer to the celiac trunk, superior mesenteric artery and retroperitoneal space were at a high risk of local recurrences. Non-uniform expansions from GTV are required.
