Current and Future Initiatives for Radiation Oncology at the National Cancer Institute in the Era of Precision Medicine

Radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer is highly effective for cure and palliation. Radiation therapy has contributed to the cure of some cancers, including most cases of local or regional stage breast and prostate cancer (1), and to-the durable-control of many others. More than 16 million American children and adults with a history of cancer treatment, half including radiation therapy, are alive as of January 1, 2017 (2, 3). Radiation therapy success might be due in large measure to nonstop federal investment in basic to clinical to population radiation therapy research, which has produced practice-changing impact in several diseases, including enhanced cures, organ preservation, and enhanced survival.
