Magnetic resonance guided focused ultrasound surgery for bone metastasis: from pain palliation to biological ablation?

Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS), also known as high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), is a totally non-invasive procedure that combines two technologies: First, high intensity focused ultrasound waves which are converted to thermal energy at precise focal point. This rises tissue temperature in the target area to approximately 65°C to 85°C resulting in irreversible thermal ablation of the tissue. Second, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) based three–dimensional imaging of the focal point plus real time monitoring of the tissue temperature in the target zone.
