Genetic predisposition to acute recurrent and chronic pancreatitis—more evidence for a role in children

Acute inflammation of the pancreas, marked by interstitial edema of the pancreas, moderate to severe abdominal pain and tenderness, and elevation in serum lipase and amylase, can be a serious illness, with up to 20% of children suffering moderate to severe disease with necrosis, pseudocyst formation, systemic complications, and even organ failure. More challenging still are the few patients who are plagued by recurrent acute or chronic pancreatitis. These children can suffer from repeated bouts of severe and disabling pain, atrophy and fibrosis of the pancreas, and progressive endocrine and exocrine dysfunction.
