Family Planning in Pediatrics: An Appeal for Enhanced Training

As a third-year medical student wrapping up my obstetrics and gynecology rotation, I prepared for my final clinic patient: a 6-week postpartum visit for a woman who was interested in a contraceptive implant. I gathered the supplies as I awaited her arrival—only to return them to the supply closet an hour later. She became yet another name on the lengthy list of postpartum no-shows. I wondered about the reproductive fate of this woman and of the numerous others who missed this key visit for re-initiation of contraception, particularly as I had learned that, for many of our uninsured patients, this would be the last visit covered by temporary prenatal health insurance.
