The Safety and Quality of Abortion Services in the United States: What Does the Evidence Indicate?

Since the Institute of Medicine last evaluated abortion services in 1975, there have been many advances. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine was asked to answer a series of questions on the appropriate use of different types of abortion services, associated health risks, safety and quality of care, necessary facility requirements, health care provider skills, safeguards for different interventions, safe provision of pain management, and the research gaps.
