Our back cover features an individual white pulp from the spleen of an adult Xenopus laevis frog, immunized with Phycoerythrin (PE). The white pulp was imaged for PE fluorescence and then stained with H&E, and illustrates a repositioning of PE-laden antigen presenting cells in a defined oval near to the external perimeter of the white pulp. The image is taken from Neely et al. (pp. 430–440), who show that conventional, hematopoietic lineage dendritic cells acquire and retain native antigen at their surface for transport into the B cell follicles of the splenic white pulp for subsequent presentation to B lymphocytes, demonstrating follicular dendritic cell functionality prior to the evolutionary emergence of follicular dendritic cells in mammals. The image has been digitally modified for the cover.
