Radiation Oncology Needs to Adopt a Comprehensive Standard for Data Transfer: The Case for HL7 FHIR

In a recent editorial (1), the current state of health information technology in radiation oncology was well described and characterized as "unacceptable and unsustainable." The authors laid out numerous examples of how the current generation of software is deficient in interoperability and usability, resulting in inefficiencies and possible safety issues. We agree totally with this analysis of the situation. However, we believe that these issues raise larger concerns regarding future progress in radiation oncology.
