Novel Endovascular Access Trial: The Wave of the Future or Just Another Neat Technique?

A permanent access represents the "lifeline" for patients with end-stage renal disease who are receiving hemodialysis therapy. Several national initiatives during the past few decades have emphasized the benefit of autogenous arteriovenous accesses, commonly referred to as an arteriovenous fistula (AVF). However, there has been little advance in the actual surgical techniques for the creation of these accesses. In this issue of AJKD, Lok et al1 report results of the Novel Endovascular Access Trial (NEAT), which was designed to examine the safety and efficacy of a new percutaneous system for creation of an AVF.
