Embracing Complexity: How to Build an Evidence Base Capable of Supporting Patient-Centered Care

In 1992, David Sackett, Gordon Guyatt, and others published an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association describing a new paradigm for practicing and teaching medicine.1 Evidence-based medicine, the authors wrote, "de-emphasizes intuition, unsystematic clinical experience, and pathophysiologic rationale as sufficient grounds for clinical decision-making and stresses the examination of evidence from clinical research."1(p 2420) More than 2 decades later, evidence-based medicine is now fully entrenched as the dominant paradigm–shaping medical practice, teaching, and research worldwide.
