The Need for Outcome Studies Prior to Large-Scale Implementation of Screening for Anal Cancer

To the Editor—We read with great interest the article by Gaisa et al [1] in which the authors documented the increased rates of anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions among human immunodeficiency virus–infected women. While we recognize the impact that cervical cancer screening has had on disease prevention, we are concerned that the conclusions drawn by Gaisa et al may perpetuate the false notion that anal cancer screening is supported by evidence of reduced morbidity and mortality.
