Laboratory parameters, endoscopic findings, and radiological features are important yardsticks to assess the activity of inflammatory bowel disease. Nonetheless, patients' symptoms and reported outcomes are increasingly recognized in clinical practice and research. In a systematic review in this issue of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, de Jong and colleagues1 evaluated 17 articles presenting 20 different patient-reported outcome measures. Unfortunately, patients were not involved in the development of most of these measures.
