A robust cell-responsive hydrogel photoresist, based on peptide-crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol), is demonstrated by Xiao-Hua Qin and co-workers in article number 1705564. This material enables spatiotemporal construction and manipulation of 3D cellular environments at micrometer-scale resolution. By focusing a multiphoton laser, cell-adhesive ligands are site-specifically immobilized in a 3D matrix to direct cell invasion, showing promise for 4D biology and in situ tissue engineering.
