Can We Prevent Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia?

Northway et al1 first described bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a chronic condition resulting from injury to the developing lung and pulmonary vasculature, in larger preterm infants with severe respiratory failure after exposure to high oxygen and ventilator pressures exposure. Today, BPD most commonly occurs in extremely preterm infants and is characterized by a milder but protracted course and a different pathobiology than the BPD described 50 years ago.2
