Nanodiamonds: Nanodiamonds That Swim (Adv. Mater. 30/2017)

Thumbnail image of graphical abstract

Nanodiamonds with nitrogen-vacancy centers are emerging as nanoscale quantum probes for bio-sensing and imaging. In article number 1701024, Peer Fischer and co-workers report an active nanodiamond swimmer in fluids, composed of a nanodiamond crystal with nitrogen vacancies (NV) and a light-driven self-thermophoretic micromotor. The precise manipulation of its locomotion is achieved by exploiting shape-dependent hydrodynamic interactions. Successful demonstration of addressing the NV electron spin resonance of the self-propelled swimmer confirms new possibilities in nanoscale metrology in fluids. Image by Alejandro Posada Boada.
