Lessons from Goldilocks: maternal weight gain and neurocognitive outcomes of ELGAN

Children born preterm are at risk for neurocognitive impairment. Multiple risk factors have been identified that increase the risk of poor neurodevelopmental outcome following preterm delivery. Although the association between maternal prepregnancy body mass index and pregnancy weight gain and neurocognitive impairment has been studied in term infants, whether these potentially modifiable risk factors affect outcomes in children born preterm is unknown. In this volume of The Journal, Jensen et al examine this association in a large cohort of children that were born extremely preterm (<28 weeks' gestational age).
