ABSTRACT

The capture and safe storage of radioactive iodine (129I or 131I) are of a compelling significance in the generation of nuclear energy and waste storage. Because of their physiochemical properties, Porous Organic Polymers (POPs) are considered to be one of the most sought classes of materials for iodine capture and storage. Herein, we report on the preparation and characterization of tw o triazine-based, nitrogen-rich, porous organic polymers, NRPOP-1 (SABET = 519 m2 g-1) and NRPOP-2 (SABET = 456 m2 g-1), by reacting 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine or 1,4-bis-(2,4-diamino-1,3,5-triazine)-benzene with thieno[2,3-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarboxaldehyde, respectively, and their use in the capture of volatile iodine. NRPOP-1 and NRPOP-2 showed a high adsorption capacity of iodine vapor with an uptake of up to 317 wt % at 80 °C and 1 bar and adequate recyclability. The NRPOPs were also capable of removing up to 87% of iodine from 300 mg L-1 iodine-cyclohexane solution. Furthermore, the iodine-loaded polymers, I2@NRPOP-1 and I2@NRPOP-2, displayed good antibacterial activity against Micrococcus luteus (ML), Escherichia coli (EC), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PSA). The synergic functionality of these novel polymers makes them promising materials to the environment and public health.

Systematic construction and external validation of an immune‐related prognostic model for nasopharyngeal carcinoma

xlomafota13 shared this article with you from Inoreader

Abstract

Background

We attempted to identify the most reliable immune-related index for predicting nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) prognosis and to reveal its precise and integrated relationship with NPC progression.

Method

One thousand seven hundred and six patients with newly diagnosed NPC (1320 from the primary cohort and 386 from the validated cohort) from January 2010 to March 2014 were enrolled. Clinical features and 12 immune-related variables were analyzed.

Results

A high absolute lymphocyte count (ALC; >3.2 × 109/L) correlated with a poor prognosis of patients with NPC. Significant OS differences were discovered between patients with high ALC and no ALC elevation (p < 0.05, in primary cohort), showing similar prognostic risk to patients with advanced NPC (p > 0.05, in validated cohort). ALC improved the predictive performance of the basic tumor-node-metastasis prognostic model (p = 0.025), which was reliably validated in the external independent cohort.

Conclusion

High ALC is a surrogate marker for improved prognostic risk stratification in NPC.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol. 2022 Feb 15. doi: 10.1007/s00405-022-07294-x. Online ahead of print.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Peritonsillar abscess is a common complication of acute tonsillitis. However, no consensus has been reached yet on the optimal treatment of this condition. Therefore, this study aimed to compare clinical outcomes of immediate and interval abscess tonsillectomy.

METHODS: The databases of PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were searched for completed studies published until the 1st of November 2021. Comparative studies assessing intraoperative and postoperative outcomes of immediate and interval abscess tonsillectomy were considered, with the primary outcome being postoperative hemorrhage. Operative time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative pain, and duration of hospital stay were classed as secondary outcomes. A random-effects pairwise meta-analysis of both randomized a nd non-randomized trials was conducted. Subgroup analysis linked to the randomization of trials was executed. Quality assessment was performed, utilizing the Cochrane risk of bias tool and ROBINS-I tool for randomized and non-randomized trials, respectively.

RESULTS: Data from 265 cases stemming from six trials were pooled together. For postoperative bleeding rates, no statistically significant difference between immediate and interval tonsillectomy was detected (OR = 1.26; 95% CI 0.27, 5.86; p = 0.77). By contrast, longer hospital stay was observed for patients subjected to interval tonsillectomy (SMD = - 0.78; CI - 1.39 to- 0.17; p = 0.01). For operative time and intraoperative blood loss, no statistically significant difference was noticed between immediate and interval tonsillectomy (SMD = 1.10; 95% CI - 0.13, 2.33; p = 0.08; and SMD = 0.04; 95% CI - 0.49, 0.57; p = 0.88; respectively).

CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that quinsy tonsillectomy appears to be a safe meth od, providing full abscess drainage and instant relief of the symptoms. Moreover, quinsy tonsillectomy was not associated with a statistically higher postoperative hemorrhage incidence rate than immediate tonsillectomy.

Ear Nose Throat J. 2022 Feb 15:1455613221077594. doi: 10.1177/01455613221077594. Online ahead of print.

ABSTRACT

We hereby present a rare case of laryngeal zoster presenting with unilateral odynophagia and hemifacial pain in an immunocompetent host. Visualization of the characteristic vesicles is challenging given their short-lived and at times delayed appearance; thus, laryngeal zoster may be a largely unrecognized cause of laryngitis and cranial neuropathies. Heightened aw areness may improve prompt diagnosis, referral and initiation of antiviral therapy, while guiding patient counselling on the associated long-term sequelae such as voice and swallowing impairments, and post-herpetic neuralgia.

The clinicopathological and prognostic characteristics of mucinous micropapillary carcinoma of the breast

xlomafota13 shared this article with you from Inoreader

Histol Histopathol. 2022 Feb 15:18436. doi: 10.14670/HH-18-436. Online ahead of print.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Mucinous micropapillary carcinoma (MMPC) is a unique subtype of breast cancer, and there is as yet no detailed report on the clinical characteristics of MMPC.

METHODS: MMPC, pure mucinous breast carcinoma (PMBC), and invasive micropapillary carcinoma (IMPC) samples were enrolled simultaneously, and immunohistochemistry analysis was performed to explore the clinicopathological attributes of MMPC. Moreover, survival analyses of MMPC were performed among the MMPC, PMBC, and IMPC groups and within the MMPC group.

RESULTS: The results showed that MMPC demonstrated distinct pathological features and that vascular invasion and lymph node metastasis were two significant clinical attributes of MMPC. MMPC leads to a shorter survival time than PMBC but an increased survival time compared to IMPC, while the tumor-node-metastasis stage and lymph node metastasis were identified as two independent prognostic elements for disease-free survival in discerning the MMPC prognosis.

CONCLUSIONS: The gathered data implied that further understanding and classification of MMPC may provide better individualized therapeutic strategies for MMPC treatment.

PTH in situ measurement in patients with hyperparathyroidism: single-centre experience of 179 patients

xlomafota13 shared this article with you from Inoreader

Eur J Endocrinol. 2022 Feb 1:EJE-21-1249. doi: 10.1530/EJE-21-1249. Online ahead of print.

ABSTRACT

CONTEXT: The measurement of PTH in situ (PTHis) by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is proposed as a tool to preoperatively help localize parathyroid glands detected on ultrasound. However, the accuracy of PTHis is highly variable according to the few available studies. We aimed to develop and validate the PTHis procedure. We assessed the performance of PTHis in a large series of patients with hyperparathyroidism.

PATIENTS: The technique setup consisted of PTHis measurement in thyroid samples from patients with thyroid nodules and patients with high circulating PTH levels (tertiary hyperparathyroidism). Consecutive patients were recruited and submitted to ultrasound-guided FNA-PTHis determination.

RESULTS: During the method setup, we obtained undetectable PTHis levels in all non-parathyroid tissues after sample dilutions. PTHis was high er in patients with hyperparathyroidism (n=145, 1817±3739 ng/L, range <4.6-31,140) than in those with thyroid or undetermined cervical lesions (n=34, <4.6 ng/mL,p<0.0001). When evaluating PTHis performance in histologically proven samples (158 lesions from 121 patients), PTHis was detectable in 85/97 parathyroid lesions (87%, range 22-31,140 ng/L) and undetectable in all non-parathyroid lesions (n=61,p<0.0001). The specificity and positive predictive value were 100%, and the sensitivity was 87.6%. False-negative lesions (n=12) were smaller (9.4±5.9 mm) and more often consisted of hyperplasias (75%) than true-positive lesions (16.1±8.4 mm and 33%, p=0.009 and p=0.0089, respectively). The method was safe and well tolerated. Four educational cases are also provided.

CONCLUSIONS: PTHis determination is a safe and well-tolerated procedure that enhances the specificity of ultrasound-detected lesions. If accurately set up, it confirms the parathyroid origin of uncharac terized cervical lesions.
