Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease affecting up to 30% of the general population. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is the more severe form of NAFLD that can progress to cirrhosis and its complications, including hepatocellular carcinoma. Weight loss and lifestyle changes are known to lead to NASH resolution and improve fibrosis. However, weight loss of over 10% and life style changes are only achieved by approximately 10% of all patients. Therefore enormous efforts are underway to develop medical therapies for NASH.
