Secondary acute leukemia in sarcoma patients: a population-based study

Despite mounting concerns regarding the development of secondary acute leukemia after multimodality treatment, the risk in sarcoma patients remains poorly defined. Using data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) cohort, we found that patients treated for sarcoma have a higher incidence of secondary acute leukemia as compared to the general population. Our study suggests that radiotherapy contributes to this increased risk, although the absolute incidence remains VERY small.
