Learning from Others: Child Health and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies

Although much less often than in the past, children in every European country sometimes fall ill, and for broadly the same reasons. These include their genes and the conditions in which they live, including the risk of infection, injury, and mental illness. The burden of disease that these conditions generate is changing rapidly, however.1 Improved living conditions and immunization have greatly reduced the burden of infectious disease. Safer environments are reducing risks of injury, even though progress varies greatly.
