Improved Metastasis- and Disease-Free Survival with Preoperative Sequential Short Course Radiotherapy and FOLFOX Chemotherapy for Rectal Cancer Compared to Neoadjuvant Long Course Chemoradiotherapy; Results of a Matched Pair Analysis

To evaluate a near-total neoadjuvant (nTNT) approach to treating rectal cancer with short course radiation and FOLFOX chemotherapy prior to total mesorectal excision (TME), we performed a stage-matched cohort comparison with patients treated with nTNT to those treated with conventional neoadjuvant chemoradiation (NCRT). We found improved pathologic T-downstaging, disease free survival and distant metastasis free survival with the nTNT approach.
