Paenibacillus polymyxa and Bacillus cereus Concomitant Bacteremia: A Case Report

The genus Paenibacillus comprised 148 species and are gram-positive, facultative anaerobic, spore-forming, rod-shaped bacteria found in a variety of environments including soil. In the last decade, Paenibacillus polymyxa and its isolates have seen increasing commercial applications in agriculture and medicine. Several Paenibacillus species have been reported to cause bacteremia; however, invasive infection attributed to P. polymyxa is exceptionally rare. We report a case of bacteremia due to P. polymyxa in a human immunodeficiency virus–negative patient. Correspondence to: Aaron Baugh, MD, 3000 Arlington Ave, Mailstop 1150, Toledo, OH 43614.
