The image on this frontispiece shows a schematic of the human brain surrounded by choanoflagellates, filastereans, ichthyosporeans (the closest unicellular relatives of animals), sponges and ctenophores (early branching animals). Recent work highlights how these different, but extremely important organisms provide us with a new understanding on the evolutionary origin of synapses and neurons , as summarized in article 1700024 by Pawel Burkhardt and Simon G. Sprecher. Cover design: Davis Laundon
