Blood Pressure Variability: Does it Predict the Outcome of Acute Ischemic Stroke?

<span class="paragraphSection">Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide.<a href="#CIT0001" class="reflinks">1</a> The prognosis of stroke is highly variable and a large number of studies aimed to identify predictors of outcome in these patients in order to guide treatment decisions.<a href="#CIT0002" class="reflinks">2</a> Elevated blood pressure (BP) during the acute phase of stroke was an independent predictor of adverse outcome in some reports<a href="#CIT0003" class="reflinks">3</a>,<a href="#CIT0004" class="reflinks">4</a> but others did not confirm this association.<a href="#CIT0005" class="reflinks">5</a>,<a href="#CIT0006" class="reflinks">6</a> More recently, focus has shifted to BP variability as a risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.<a href="#CIT0007" class="reflinks">7–9</a> In hypertensive patients and normotensive subjects, increased BP variability appears to increase the risk of cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality independently of clinic or ambulatory BP measurements.<a href="#CIT0007" class="reflinks">7–9</a> However, there are limited and conflicting data regarding the prognostic significance of BP variability during the acute phase of ischemic stroke.<a href="#CIT0005" class="reflinks">5</a>,<a href="#CIT0010" class="reflinks">10</a></span>
