Long-Term Pulmonary Outcomes of a Feasibility Study of Inverse-Planned, Multibeam Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) in Node-Positive Breast Cancer Patients Receiving Regional Nodal Irradiation

Multi-beam IMRT increases the dosimetric coverage of targeted tissues while minimizing volumes of adjacent organs receiving high doses of RT, however exposes a greater volume of lung to low doses of RT, raising concern about radiation pneumonitis (RP). Our pilot study evaluated the dosimetric feasibility of inverse-planned, multibeam IMRT and incidence of RP. Coverage of targeted tissues was comprehensive, with low rates of grade 3 RP (.96%) and high 5-year locoregional recurrence-free survival (93.2%).
