Clinically-oriented Contour Evaluation using Dosimetric Indices Generated from Automated Knowledge-based Planning

Geometric indices commonly-used for contour evaluation lack clinical context, while dosimetric indices from manual planning can introduce confounding variation. We evaluated inter-resident contour variation using automated knowledge-based planning to objectively generate plans and subsequent dosimetric indices. Amidst substantial inter-resident contour variation, there were weak and inconsistent correlations between geometric and dosimetric indices, highlighting the unreliability of using geometric indices for contour evaluation. Whenever possible, automatically-generated dosimetric indices should be used for radiotherapy contour evaluation studies.
