Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine issues that are imperative to spinal surgeons when considering moving from a hospital-based surgery center to an outpatient surgery center. Before transitioning to outpatient surgery, surgeons must be aware of learning curves for procedures they intend to perform in this setting and ensure that they have achieved procedural proficiency in hospital settings first in order to promote patient safety. Surgeons must also carefully plan outpatient care protocols, taking into account proper patient selection, postoperative pain control, and complication management. The current literature suggests that experienced surgeons can successfully transition to outpatient-based surgery, with no significant differences in patient outcomes. However, the data is still limited and more investigation is necessary to characterize the initial outpatient surgical experience.
