Use of Oral Corticosteroids in the Wheezy Toddler

The treatment of acute wheeze in the toddler is a common clinical dilemma, as more than 50% of children in the preschool years have at least 1 wheezing episode.1 In addition, the toddler age bracket is associated with poorer asthma symptom control and increased rates of emergency department (ED) visits for wheeze compared with school-aged, or adolescent, children.2-4 However, despite the high morbidity of early childhood wheeze, most toddlers who wheeze repeatedly in toddlerhood do not progress to persistent asthma.
