We appreciate the thoughtful letter from Hwang et al in response to our recent report. We agree that race differences in outcomes found in our meta-analysis could come from genetic effects and/or be affected by the socioeconomic and health disparity effects associated with racial inequalities in the US (including possible epigenetic effects) and regret that we did not make that clear. We think that this is indeed an important conversation to have as we work together to improve outcomes for infants in individually tailored ways.
