Retrograde colon capsule endoscopy with the self-propelling capsule endoscope: the first human trial (with videos)

Abstract

We developed the self-propelling capsule endoscope (SPCE), a modified capsule endoscope that can be controlled from outside the patient's body and enables real-time observation. We tested retrograde colon capsule endoscopy with the SPCE in a human volunteer.

We used the New MiniMermaid System reported previously.¹ The SPCE was created by connecting a dedicated fin made of silicon resin (19 mm long) with a micro-magnet to the PillCam SB2 video capsule (Covidien, Dublin, Ireland).
