Expanding adolescent family planning beyond the walls of the family planning clinic

The most effective way to prevent adolescent pregnancy is to expand access to effective contraceptives. This has been long understood from analyses of the National Survey of Family Growth,1 and was unequivocally demonstrated by the Contraceptive Choice Project in St. Louis2 and the Colorado Family Planning Initiative.3 However, for the vast majority of adolescents in the US, effective contraceptive methods such as intrauterine devices and hormonal contraceptives are available only with a visit to a family planning clinic, gynecologist, or a subset of primary care providers.
