Taking the baby out of the box: moving closer to evidence-based incubator weaning

Caring for infants in incubators to support thermoregulation was one of the first evidence-based strategies to improve survival of preterm infants (Pediatrics 1958; 22:876-86). Although this has been known for more than 60 years, in the intervening years there has been little evidence to guide the weaning of infants out of the incubator and practices vary considerably between hospitals. In this volume of The Journal, Shankaran et al report the results of a randomized trial of incubator weaning at weights of 1600 vs 1800 grams in 366 infants from 17 centers across the United States.
