Understanding the “terrible 2s” in preterm toddlers

Behavioral and psychiatric problems have been well described in many cross-sectional studies of preterm children, but whether these problems evolve from typical infant and toddler behavioral challenges has been less studied. This is important because typical difficult behaviors in infants and toddlers often respond to effective parenting techniques and resolve with further maturation. In contrast, early diagnosis and more formal intervention may help improve outcomes and preserve the parent-child relationship when children are destined for long-term behavioral and emotional problems.
