Seizures in Infants Born Preterm: Defining the Scale of the Problem

Converging data from animal models, biomarker studies, and observational cohorts suggest that neonatal seizures contribute to brain injury and could be one modifiable risk factor in efforts to prevent later neurodevelopmental impairment. Unfortunately, the diagnosis of neonatal seizures is challenging. The majority of neonatal seizures are subtle or subclinical, with no overt outward clinical signs despite ongoing abnormal electrical activity in the brain.1 Accurate diagnosis requires electroencephalography (EEG); the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society advises continuous video EEG monitoring as the gold standard for seizure detection and diagnosis.
