Re-conceptualizing Associations between Race and Morbidities of Extreme Prematurity

In this volume of The Journal, Ryan et al report a secondary analysis from the 11 centers included in the Prematurity and Respiratory Outcome Program (PROP).1 The purpose of PROP was to identify biomarkers and other factors associated with long-term respiratory morbidity among preterm infants, and the goal of this secondary analysis was to determine whether black infants were at lower risk of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). In PROP, enrolled extremely low gestational age black infants had a lower incidence of BPD (38%) compared with white infants (45%).
