Recurrent Acute Kidney Injury: Can We Differentiate From Nonrecovery and CKD Progression?

The growing evidence establishing short- and long-term consequences of acute kidney injury (AKI) has emphasized the need for improvement in the management and follow-up of patients with AKI.1 Several cohort studies have confirmed that nonrecovery of kidney function following an episode of AKI is a major contributor to the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD).2,3 Several risk factors associated with nonrecovery from AKI have been identified, such as baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), increased age, diabetes, proteinuria, AKI severity and duration, and recurrent episodes of AKI.
