One step forward for evidence-based therapy for learning problems in preterm children

Executive functions, such as working memory, emerge during childhood. Premature children are at risk for impaired executive function; this often becomes apparent at school age or adolescence when learning and behavior are compromised (Semin Perinatol 2016; 40:520-9). Therapy for working memory may be recommended but this may cause a dilemma for parents and pediatricians as the evidence basis for specific types of training often are lacking and this is not likely to be covered by insurance. In this volume of The Journal, Anderson et al describe a randomized trial of a commercial working memory training program for 7-year-old extremely preterm children (born at <28 weeks of gestation or with birth weight <1000g).
