Plesiomonas shigelloides Gastroenteritis from Freshwater Ingestion in Western Pennsylvania

Plesiomonas shigelloides is a rare etiologic agent of bacterial gastroenteritis. Since the year 2000, there is only one published case report of P. shigelloides gastroenteritis. Presented here is a case reporting the typical presentation and successful oral antibiotic treatment of a rarely reported cause of gastroenteritis in the United States, after ingestion of freshwater from a stream in western Pennsylvania.
