Families want to be prepared to take care of their children after discharge and to understand if their child may have any long-term functional limitations. In the most vulnerable patients, neonatal resuscitation decisions may be influenced by the perception of a high likelihood of disabilities. Clinicians may use rates of morbidity and long-term outcomes as markers of quality neonatal care and trends in long term outcomes help us gauge if we are improving care over time.
