Prophylactic Cranial Irradiation in Extensive Stage Small Cell Lung Cancer: Outcomes at a Comprehensive Cancer Centre

Prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) continues to be a controversial practice in extensive-stage small cell lung cancer with contrasting outcomes between two randomized controlled trials. We sought to examine our institution's experience in determining the impacts of PCI on survival and rate of brain metastasis accounting for the impact of initial post-chemotherapy imaging. Patients were not followed with serial brain imaging. We found an increase in survival with PCI regardless of the status of post-chemotherapy imaging.
