Will you be my first colonoscopy patient? Planning simulator training for novice endoscopists

In their single-blinded randomized controlled trial of 37 novice endoscopists, Grover et al1 compared the impact on clinical performance of using 2 different simulation-based training (SBT) strategies. Their study demonstrated that the progressive learning–based curriculum (PLC) outperformed the structured comprehensive curriculum (SCC) with respect to the primary outcome—the clinical performance of 2 colonoscopies—and in secondary measures in the simulator setting. This study builds on the previously published randomized trial by those authors2 in this journal in which they demonstrated the superiority of a simulation training curriculum over self-regulated learning on a simulator for the acquisition of technical and nontechnical skills in colonoscopy.
