In Reply to ‘Newer GFR Estimating Equations Require Validation in Different Populations’

We disagree with Delanaye, Ebert, and Pottel1 that our comparisons of newer GFR estimating equations were not appropriate, for the following reasons. First, we did not use the CKD-EPI development database for comparing new equations to CKD-EPI. We used it only for evaluating newer equations in subgroups. Second, older patients were not under-represented in our study. The CKD-EPI creatinine database includes 556 participants older than 65 years. In this subgroup, Lund Malmö revised (LMR) has larger bias, full-age spectrum (FAS) has similar bias, and both equations have similar precision and accuracy (root mean square error [RMSE] and percentage of participants in whom the difference between estimated [eGFR] and measured GFR is >30% of measured GFR [P30]) to CKD-EPI.
