Concomitant Primary Labial and Genital Herpes Simplex I Infections.

There has been a decrease in the prevalence of herpes simplex type I (HSV I) infection in adolescents in the United States while the relative number of genital infections caused by HSV I has increased. Although transmission is more likely to occur during active skin lesions, asymptomatic shedding of herpes simplex virus from oral or genital sources can lead to infection in susceptible hosts. I wish to report the acquisition of concomitant primary labial and genital HSV I infection in a man and woman from an asymptomatic woman with a history of labial HSV I infection.
